LEGISLATIVE WATCH COMMITTEE
UUCC’s Legislative Watch Committee keeps a close eye on local, state and national legislation and frequently prepares fact sheets for members and friends of the congregation and to 20 other Maryland UU congregations along with suggested letters that can be sent to legislators and other public decision makers. These letters and fact sheets are sent via email to the UUCC mailing list and entitled “An Item For Your Consideration.”
If you have an item you want considered, please send an email message to Keith Smith.
UUCC is an active participating congregation in the UU Legislative Ministry of Maryland and the UU’s For Social Justice.
The Legislative Watch Committee pairs members of the congregation with legislators to make face-to face contact on various issues when legislatures are in session.
LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY TIPS
Face-to-face visits to legislators and staff are the most influential method of advocacy. You will find that state and county legislators are much more accessible and approachable than U.S. Representatives and Senators. Most state legislators have usually only one part-time staffer. Unlike Washington, in Annapolis you may find your legislator in her office alone, without "gatekeepers." As local representatives, they want to hear from their constituents, who just happen to be their neighbors. How to prepare a personal message to a legislator
