Who We Are
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia resides in the planned city of Columbia in Howard County, Maryland. About midway between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., UUCC is liberal religious institution that draws from all religions and seeks a free and independent search for truth and religious meaning. We believe in pledging our time and vigor to the continuing celebration of spirit, of the world and of humankind.
The Social Action Council of UUCC is comprised of several committees:
Equal Exchange (Fair Trade Tea, Cocoa, Chocolate) Shade Grown Coffee Pathways Cleanup Native Planting around the Owen Brown Interfaith Center
Legislative Watch PFLAG UU Legislative Ministry of Maryland
People Acting Together in Howard (PATH) Blood Drive Congregations Concerned for the Homeless Food Bank Moveable Feast Howard County National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Christmas Dinner
Welcoming Congregation Committee UUCC is an acknowledged UUA Welcoming Congregation supportive of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals and their families.
Second Sunday Outreach Offering Every second Sunday, the Social Action Council selects an organization—local, state or national — that reflects our Unitarian Universalist values to receive funds collected during the worship offering. Averaging about $1500, these funds have been directed to organizations such as the Rainforest Action Network, Equality Maryland, Domestic Violence Center, UN Commissioner for Refugees (Darfur).
The core Peace Team organizes educational, advocacy and action experiences for members, friends and youth of the congregation as part of the UUA Commission on Social Witness Peacemaking congregational study/action issue.
As part of our national UU effort to become more responsive to racial justice issues, and to become a more multi-cultural spiritual community, the Journey Toward Wholeness Team consults with the Joseph Priestley District and other congregations and develops, organizes and facilitates congregational programs, workshops, worship services, religious education courses, forums, films and discussion sessions to increase our understanding of white privilege and institutional racism.. |
